From Buildings to Tunnels: What Moving into Infrastructure BIM Has Taught Me
Hi, I'm LinkHubJin, a BIM engineer currently working on a large underground infrastructure project in Singapore.
Most of my earlier career was buildings — hospitals, commercial towers, high-rises. I got comfortable coordinating architecture, structure, and MEP above ground. Moving into tunnel projects felt like starting over in a lot of ways. The software was familiar. Almost everything else wasn't.
Working underground changes how you think. You're not just designing structures anymore — you're dealing with geology, existing utilities, construction sequencing, and a working space so tight that every decision actually matters.
Underground Projects Leave Very Little Room for Error
On a building, plenty of issues can still get adjusted mid-construction. Tunnels are a lot less forgiving. Once excavation starts, unexpected ground conditions or a conflict with existing underground utilities can hit both safety and schedule hard.
That's where BIM earns its keep. Before any equipment touches the site, we spend hours going through models, checking underground data, hunting for clashes. Every issue we catch on screen is one less problem waiting for us underground.
Infrastructure BIM Is About More Than 3D Models
A lot of people think BIM is mostly about making impressive 3D visuals. On infrastructure projects, that's a small slice of the job.
Most of my time actually goes into making sure the information inside the model matches what's going to happen on site. Can this equipment physically fit through the tunnel? Is there room for maintenance access later? Will two construction crews end up in each other's way during installation?
None of that gets answered by good-looking graphics. It gets answered through accurate data, careful coordination, and a lot of back-and-forth between engineers, contractors, and site teams.
Every Project Creates a Digital Asset for the Future
One thing I like about infrastructure work — it's not built for the next five years. A lot of these tunnels, rail lines, utility networks are going to be serving the city decades from now.
Which means the BIM data we're building today eventually helps some future engineer inspect, maintain, upgrade this stuff. Every correction, every verified detail becomes part of a long-term record.
Knowing that what I'm doing today might still matter to someone twenty or thirty years out gives the job a different kind of weight.
A Different Kind of Engineering Challenge
Moving from buildings to infrastructure pushed me well outside my comfort zone, and I'm actually glad it did.
Every project teaches me something — understanding underground construction methods, getting better at cross-discipline coordination, finding smarter ways to manage complex BIM data.
The deeper I get into this, the more I think BIM was never really about the models.
It's about cutting down uncertainty before construction even starts, helping people make better calls, and building things that keep serving a city long after we've moved on to the next project.
